Hotel Etiquette

After a grueling journey you are finally pulling into the hotel parking lot and the lure of soft pillows are distracting your sleepy mind. As you enter the lobby you are becoming their guest. A paying guest, but a guest none the less. There are a few tips that will make your stay wonderfully pleasant.

Inquire if they have a manager's special.

Managers special are often the dirt low price that a hotel gives to its customers. Although just because you ask doesn't mean they will tell you or give it to you, it is still worth a try.

Find out if they have amenities.

Amenities like continental breakfasts, gyms, pools are all things you should ask about when making your hotel choice. It is much more pleasing to stay at a hotel with a nice full continental breakfast then a place where the early bird gets the worm... I mean doughnut.

Check ahead of time if animals are allowed.

This is very important. If the hotel your staying at doesn't allow pets and you have a pet in your room you could be fined up in access of $200 or more.

Ask for a smoking room if you smoke.

Again this could add to a fine of hundreds of dollars on your bill if you smoke in a non smoking room. More and more hotels are cracking down on this policy.

If you need something ask the staff.

Just as if you are in someone's home you don't start rummaging through their drawers, so don't go rummaging the drawers outside your hotel room. It is not only aggravating to hotel staff, but its easier just to ask.

Treat your hotel room like home.

Don't throw a massive parties or trash a room. Now a days all hotels ask you to register with a credit card, so if you do do unfair damage to the room then they will charge you for it. If you refuse to pay they may even take you to court to cover damages.

Take only what is freely given.

Hotels now have a huge number of amenities take advantage of all of them including free bottled waters, pillow mints, and breakfast. Do not however take pillows, blankets, or any other articals in the rooms unless you are willing to pay convienence fees for those items. Hotels have begun cracking down on the theft of in room items, because that is the number one loss in a hotel.

Tips are always welcome.

Tiping often isn't thought of when you rent a room, but it is proper to leave a few dollars per night for the housekeepers. These women who come in and clean your rooms and make sure everything stays looking nice work very hard for often times minimum wage. A few exta dollars, a dollar, or even the change out of your pocket might not seem like much, but to them it is money that could make all the difference.

The next time you step into a hotel remember always be polite it gets you farther and treat the hotel like home. The hotel staff wants you to feel as if your at home so they will try their hardest to help you out where they can.
